“Venomous Lumpsucker” is a dark, witty story about environmental collapse and runaway capitalism from the author of “The Teleportation Accident.”

In the near future: tens of thousands of species disappear each year, and an entire industry has developed around their extinctions. For example, biobanks: secure archives of DNA samples, from which lost organisms could one day be resurrected. But one day, everything disappeared. A mysterious cyberattack hits all biobanks simultaneously, erasing the last traces of extinct species. Karin Resaint and Mark Halyard focus on one species in particular: the poisonous lumpsucker, a nasty little bottom-feeder that just happens to be the smartest fish on the planet. Through the dystopian landscapes of the 2030s – a nature reserve full of toxic waste; a floating city on the ocean; the hinterland of a totalitarian state – Resaint and Halyard search for a surviving lumpsucker. And the further they go, the deeper they get drawn into the mystery of the attack on the biobanks.
