Barnes & Noble will host author and poet Alessandra Narváez Varela at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, to continue its program dedicated to connecting Las Cruces and El Paso to the region’s literary heritage, Barnes & Noble said.

The event will include a short reading, lively discussion and refreshments.

It is free and open to the public.

Narváez Varela is the author of “Thirty Talks Weird Love”. She grew up in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a bilingual Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Texas, El Paso, where she now teaches.

Set in Ciudad Juarez in the 1990s, “Thirty Talks Weird Love” is Narváez Varela’s debut novel and is available for purchase from Barnes & Noble.

In the book, “a 13-year-old girl growing up in Mexico is visited by her future 30-year-old self in this powerful verse young adult novel about self-acceptance,” according to https://alessandranarvaezvarela.com/ .

I am very excited about the event at Barnes and Noble on July 9,” Narváez Varela told the Bulletin.

“Las Cruces and New Mexico hold a very special place in my heart. I taught at NMSU for a semester, which I enjoyed. Also, I work with Doña Ana Community College to teach English classes and love how I was treated as an adjunct teacher. Finally, I really, really admire the way New Mexico has handled Covid and other issues, such as equal access to college (free college isn’t possible? Think again !)”
