They call on young writers to enter. Entrants will be required to write a short story, in any language, set in one of Johannesburg’s public spaces.

Submissions should not exceed 4,000 words and may be in fiction or non-fiction, in any literary form, including poetry, prose, play or film script.

Authors of all age groups are welcome but must not have been previously published.

The writing must describe, discuss or take place in a specific public space somewhere in greater Johannesburg.

Three entries will be selected by a jury, each with a chance to win R2,000.

One piece will be chosen to be paired with an excerpt from a literary work set in Johannesburg, with both texts being used as inspiration for a site-specific public performance to be produced by UJ Arts & Culture in May 2023.

The deadline for submission is November 30 at midnight and no late entries will be accepted.
