The first one sonic the hedgehog the movie was a simple Ben Schwartz story blue, CG rodent fighting Jim Carrey’s Doctor Eggman, but the sequel went ahead Sonic traditions. In addition to bringing in Knuckles and Tails, two extremely important members of Sonic’s supporting cast, Sonic 2 bring enough material of Sega’s game franchise to ensure that it to be able to continue for a while.

In a recent Q&A, which you can see above, writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller discussed some tentative plans for Sonic 3. Currently the movie is at a point where they’re just throwing around ideas to see what works and how to put them together in a real movie, but there were some interesting nuggets of information in there. The second film’s post-credits scene ended with a brief reveal of Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic’s nemesis who first appeared in 2001. Sonic Adventure 2. Shadow became a popular character in his own right, at one point headlining his own single-player game in 2005. When asked who they had in mind to voice the character, the writing duo said which they were only focusing on on the character at the moment, but wouldn’t turn down bringing in a big Hollywood actor like they did for Knuckles, who was voiced by Idris Elba.

Casey and Miller also revealed that Sonic 3 would bring in elements from both games – meaning we’ll likely see Eggman’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, as well as Shadow’s childhood friend, Maria, who both got their start in Sonic adventure 2. With the Robotnik family being so essential to the franchise, both men want to bring back Jim Carrey for the third movie, but with the actor seemingly retired now, it all depends on whether he wants to return or not.

Although Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails are the main trio, they have more recently become a quartet thanks to Amy Rose, a longtime supporting character in the franchise. With his big crush on Sonic and an even bigger hammer, fans naturally want to see the pink hedgehog appear in these films. Without breaking their NDA, the couple teased that things were “in the works” for the character. With the popularity of Sonic’s friends and foes, Miller and Casey are aware of the desire to see more of them in the movies and are eager to meet fan expectations. “As long as people want them,” Miller said, “we’ll keep adding another person from the gaming universe.”

sonic the hedgehog 2 is on Paramount+ now. The project of Sonic 3 is to release it in 2024.
