Writers join hands to form Pakistan Screenwriters Association

Good news for the Pakistani entertainment industry; now playwrights will also have appropriate representation in the industry, as veterans and renowned writers have joined forces to form the Pakistan Screenwriters Association.

Just like the actors, who are protected by the organization known as ACT, and the producers are covered by the UPA, there was no framework for the writers – who are responsible for the soul of any project – the scenario. According to reports, the organization appears to be the sole representative of professional screenwriters employed in the Pakistani entertainment industry. The association aspires to work in collaboration with channels and productions to safeguard the rights of writers, in particular their copyright rights.

The initiative was taken by famous screenwriter, producer and host Asma Nabeel, who brought us dramas such as Khaani, Surkh Chandni and Dil Kiya Karey, to name a few. Soon a number of screenwriters joined the initiative and a new committee was elected.

The executive committee includes Vasay Chaudhry as chairman and Umera Ahmed as vice chairman. Saji Gul will be the general secretary, while Asma Nabeel will be the co-secretary. Inaam Hassan will take care of finances as secretary of finance and Rida Bilal will be the spokesperson for the executive committee. Big guys like Zafar Mairaj, Amna Mufti, Syed Mohammed Ahmed and Bee Gul are the advisers on board.
